To the editor:

I thought I should let it be known that a recent casualty of the new marijuana legislation is living out the remnants of his shattered life among us in Clinton. Donald (not his real name) ran aground of the law last year and narrowly missed going to prison.

His sentence of 30 days of community service would require him to volunteer with nonprofit organizations for 240 hours of unpaid labor. He started in November at a local charity and his first job was to wash all the windows and remove lettering inside and out. When he asked what to use, he was told some Windex and a rag. There were over 30 4-by-6 foot windows. He went home for his window washing tools and did all the windows.

This made some people happy and some people unhappy. Through the Christmas holidays and New Year’s, Donald worked as a volunteer doing many different things and this made some people happy and some people unhappy, and yet something unforeseen occurred … it made Donald happy, too.

Soon thereafter, Donald renewed his medical marijuana card for another year and was overheard that day at work discussing this with a customer. The next day, Donald went to work and was “let go” from his volunteer position for discussing this subject and this made some people happy and some people unhappy, and it broke Donald’s happiness, too. The last time I saw Donald he was wondering what happened … as he filled out volunteer forms.
