Dancers earn acclaim at talent competition

Whidbey members of the Island Dance Competition Team competed with six dances and brought home six regional champion trophies and a Special Recognition Judges Ribbon from the Rainbow Connection Golden Tournament of Talent ’09.

Whidbey members of the Island Dance Competition Team competed with six dances and brought home six regional champion trophies and a Special Recognition Judges Ribbon from the Rainbow Connection Golden Tournament of Talent ’09.

The tournament was held Jan. 17 at the Highline Performing Arts Center in Burien.

“Do You Love Me,” a ‘60s medley danced by Sylvia Hurlburt, Cassie Neil and Melissa Smith, choreographed by Susan Vanderwood, won the Special Recognition Ribbon, “Funky-lishes”; it also won two trophies, a “High Gold” and “1st Overall High Point” for their category: Junior (ages 9-11) Jazz Duo/Trio, Newby (dancers with 2 years or less experience).

“Walkin’ On Sunshine,” danced by Weslee Doucette, Abigail Rookstool and Grace Rookstool, choreographed by Susan Vanderwood, won a “Gold” trophy in Junior Jazz Duo/Trio.

“Medley,” danced by Sylvia Hurlburt, Cassie Neil, Abigail Rookstool, Grace Rookstool and Melissa Smith, choreographed by Graham Vanderwood, won a “Gold” trophy in Junior Tap Small Group.

“My Girl,” danced by Zane Vanderwood, choreographed by Andrea Burr, won a “Gold” trophy in Junior Hip Hop Solo.

“Quiet In My Town,” danced by Heather Plumberg, choreographed by Jamee Pitts, won a “High Gold” trophy in Senior Lyrical Solo.

“Money,” danced by Graham Vanderwood and Eva Sherlock choreographed by Andrea Burr won a “Gold” trophy in Senior Hip Hop Duo/Trio.
