Please call Legion Post 141 at 321-5696.South Whidbey American Legion Post 141 is making sure nobody — including shut-ins at home — goes without a Thanksgiving dinner next Thursday.This is the second year the Legion has taken over the program begun years ago by Langley resident Herman Visser, who recently moved away. And this year, there’s a two-pronged attack on Thanksgiving hunger and loneliness.Tom Arhontas, who spearheaded the community dinner last year, is leading the effort to assure that shut-ins all have a dinner delivered to them. Local churches are recommending people in need, and he will be cooking turkey, ham or lamb for them at the kitchen in the school district’s bus barn, from where delivery vehicles will fan out on Thanksgiving Day. Call 341-2539 if you know someone who would enjoy such a delivery.Meanwhile, Dick McClellan will be head cook at the free community Thanksgiving dinner at the American Legion Hall in Bayview. With donations from area merchants and help from other groups, including the Eagles, McClellan said he expects up to 200 Thanskgiving guest this year. A complete roast turkey or ham dinner will be served from 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. All are welcome, and while there is no cost those who prefer to pay something may make a donation. Reservations are appreciated by calling the Post at 321-5696. However, if you forget to make a reservation stop by anyway. There will be plenty of food for everyone.”
