Deborah Jean Holbert of Freeland graduated from Concord Law School of Kaplan University with a Juris Doctor degree on March 1 in Los Angeles, Calif.

Holbert also holds a bachelor of arts degree from University of California, Davis.

Freeland writer wins poetry prize

Argentinean native Lorraine Healy of Freeland is the recipient of the 2007 Sixth Lois Cranston Memorial Poetry Prize.

Her winning poem, “A Poem Before We Face the Business of Death,” was published in CALYX, A Journal of Art and Literature by Women, Vol. 24, No. 2, Winter 2008.

Healy’s poem was selected from more than 500 poems submitted from throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Healy received a $300 cash award.

Students make dean’s list at SPU

Five students from the South End have been named to the Seattle Pacific University 2007 Autumn Quarter Dean’s List.

The scholars are Jessica Joy Johnson, Kelly Ann Schorr and Elise Christine Spencer of Clinton, Lara Elizabeth Patterson of Freeland, and Callie McCaran Supsinskas of Langley.

Students on the dean’s list have completed at least 12 credits and attained a 3.5 or higher grade point average.

Local student excels at EWU

Mary McCune, a graduate of South Whidbey High School, has earned a spot on the winter 2008 dean’s list at Eastern Washington University.

An undergraduate student who earns 12 quality hours and receives a GPA of 3.5 or better is placed on the dean’s list for the quarter.
