“LMS students Kesha Holibonich, Abby Vehorn and Caitilynne Larmore plan the Senior Prom, taking place at the middle school next Friday. The sixth grade Team B students at Langley Middle School are very excited. On Friday afternoon, April 27, they are holding a Senior Prom in their gym. And they are inviting all the seniors of South Whidbey– those citizens age 65 of older — to be their guests. With some assistance from the more experienced 7th graders, elaborate plans have been made for a gala affair. Starting at 2:30 p.m., the renowned senior group Swing Again Jazz Band will begin playing live music, continuing throughout the afternoon. Students and seniors will teach each other their favorite dances, and free refreshments will be served. Sixth grade teachers assisting the students are Susie Richards, Sandy Gilbert, Rosie Donnelly and Sheila McCue. Richards explained how the prom event came about. Last year the middle school received a National Learn and Serve America Northwest Rural Grant. We feel very honored because the Langley Middle School was one of 10 in five Northwest states to receive this three-year grant. The grant provides funds to involve the young people in planning and carrying out community service projects.Planning has certainly been going on. Besides the live band for music, arrangements have been made for a Memory Room off to the side, where seniors can sit to relax and tell stories to the young people about their own teen years. School secretary Sue Terhar will act as photographer during the afternoon, taking pictures of all the charming guests and their friends for only a dollar. Sandy Gilbert and Sheila McCue will supervise the dance lesson exchanges. Out of respect for an older generation who were teens when money went much further, admission is only 35 cents. Dress is optional – up or down, as desired. No tuxes or limos.Seniors who wish to attend are requested to call the Senior Center, 321-1600, if attending so the free refreshments can be adequate. Lots of Team B sixth graders will be present, and they really hope lots of seniors will too – neither dancing nor a partner required. “
All seniors are welcome at this prom
