Starved for some up-tempo tennis after handily winning their first four meets of the season, the Falcon girls were disappointed last week.

Two 3A teams that promised to provide a challenge for the South Whidbey girls didn’t even make it to the court after Sedro-Woolley canceled a March 29 meet and Anacortes just didn’t show up for a home meet scheduled last Friday.

Left with just one home matchup against a green Friday Harbor team Wednesday, the Falcons benched several of their best players and still won the meet 7-0.

Although he called the loss of two meets from the schedule disappointing, Falcon Coach Tom Kramer said a few of his younger players had close matches.

After veteran senior Molly Fox dispatched her No. 1 singles opponent 6-2, 6-0 on a sunny South Whidbey High School court, sophomore Anna Gilles played a strange match that almost required three sets. Winning the first set 6-1 against Friday Harbor’s Callie Bolstad, she struggled in the second, losing 4-6. But in a tiebreaker scored on points, she won the match with a 7-5 score.

At No. 3 singles, sophomore Sonya Morphew won 6-2, 6-2, while Megan Roosen-Runge locked up the No. 4 spot 6-0, 6-3.

In doubles, the newly formed No. 1 doubles team of Paige Oliver and Jenny Newman got used to playing together in a 6-0, 6-3 victory, while the more settled pairing of Gena Felton and Kelsey Simmons was 6-0, 6-0 winners. Chelsea Miller and Erin Charmichael then pulled out a 6-0, 6-2 match in which almost every game went to deuce.

Kramer said his team will play a rescheduled date against Sedro-Woolley later in the season, but will lose the Anacortes meet. Anacortes scheduled a conference meet last Friday and dumped a showdown with the Falcons at the last minute.
