Annual fishing season hits island — or maybe you noticed it

“A record crowd of anglers had their worst luck in years Sunday, as lowland lake fishing opened to a bust, with only the dedicated early riser and late fisher coming in with limits. All of South Whidbey’s three major lakes provided but fair fishing the day, with blame for the most part being laid to low water temperatures.”

Ferry business enjoys record customers on sunny weekend

“Columbia Beach-Mukilteo ferries did a booming business over the weekend, with sunny skies and opening day of the fishing season combining to bring out a record number of customers.

“H.R. Dally, the local manager, said that more than 1,800 more units used the ferry over the weekend of last year. Both boats ran full speed from Friday until 11:30 p.m. Sunday, carrying an average of 130 cars every 30 minutes.”

Preliminary budget okayed by directors for 1964-1965 school year

“School directors for South Whidbey approved a $308,548 preliminary budget for the 1964-65 year when they met Monday night at the school. The budget is about $5,000 below the final budget for the final budget for the 1963-64 year.

“Major changes between the new budget and the old were in teachers salaries and in maintenance of plant and equipment, with the salaries up and the maintenance down.”
