The streets of Coupeville are alive with the festival spirit this weekend, in the 37th edition of the Coupeville Arts & Crafts Festival, today and tomorrow from 9 to 6 each day.Set against the backdrop of Penn Cove and historic buildings, the event has become famous for its collection of creative arts and craft vendors, Artists in Action and live entertainment. This year there will be 200 artists and craftspeople offering jewelry, leather goods, pottery, handcrafted furniture, baskets, blown glass and more.A fine art exhibit is mounted in the Coupeville Recreation Hall, and the Artists-in-Action center will showcase blacksmithing, weaving, woodcarving and spinning. Glass blowing, portrait drawing and a potter’s wheel will also be part of the action.Entertainment in Town Park will feature some of the island’s favorite performers on the main stage, including Janie Cribbs, the South Whidbey Marimba Band, Aloha Dancers and Local Buddha. An assortment of food booths will offer festival fare as well as exotic and ethnic choices. Children’s activities in Coupeville Town Park have drawn as many as 600 kids during the two days of the festival. This year kids can design and shape their own clay boats and launch them in a small pool. Other activities include making mosaic tiles using small rocks, beads and tiles; creating colored spinners with cardboard and paint; a creation station where kids can make anything they like from a variety of materials; and T-shirt coloring, with a small fee for the shirt. All the rest is free. While the kids are busy, entertainers make music in the park starting at 11 a.m. Proceeds from the festival benefit nonprofit arts and cultural groups in Coupeville and Island County.
