“Whidbey Island whale watchers were thrilled this week as a number of orca whales, including a new baby, cavorted in waters around the island.On Wednesday, Susan Berta of the Orca Conservancy received several calls about orcas in Saratoga Passage. She went outside her home and was able to see the wales on the east side near Greenbank.These particular whales were part of the J pod, and included the adult male,and two sets of females and calves. She was able to identify one calf as the baby that was born earlier this month in the San Juans. The baby is still leaping out of the water a little more than necessary, and doesn’t quite have the rhythm down of surfacing to breathe like the older calf, Berta explained. The baby is the newest member of J Pod, a group of orcas that live most of the year in Puget Sound. The whales, including the new J Pod baby and another baby with K Pod, have been seen in the waters on both sides of Whidbey Island on several occasions this fall and winter.On Wednesday, the J pod whales were traveling north in two groups.
