“Past and present students of Bayview School from age 14 to 90 will gather Thursday, Oct. 20 at noon to dedicate the original Bayview bell at its new site on the front lawn at Bayview High School. The public is invited to participate in the dedication ceremony especially those who attended the original school in the 1920s, 1930s and early 1940s. The ceremony will include anecdotes from the early school years from some former Bayview School students including Harry Josephson and Eva Mae Gabelein. The ceremony will also recognize those people who helped bring the bell back. Dated December 1904, the bell was housed in a tower over the front of the school for years. When the school was remodeled, the bell went into storage at South Whidbey High School. John De Forest, former Bayview High School director, located it and had it brought back to Bayview. Mac McCloskey, member of the Bayview Advisory Council spearheaded the successful effort to build a new enclosure for the bell with the help of current Bayview students, and Rotary Club and Lions Club members. Nichols Brothers sandblasted the bell to remove the rust from it.Coordinator of the event from Bayview School, Jean Shaw said,“This ceremony will be result of hardwork by a lot of people. Mac (McCloskey) really did a great job spearheading the construction of the new bell tower. We are are really excited to have the bell back where it belongs.“The ceremony will take place rain or shine, Shaw added a plea for the use of a canopy for the ceremony in case of rain. For more information, or to participate in the event contact Jean Shaw at 321-2343 or Mac McCloskey at 321-7546.”
