There will be a beer-making operation at Langley’s old fire station on Second Street, perhaps by early October.

The Langley City Council on Monday night approved a lease agreement with Michael McMahon of Clinton for the rear portion of the fire hall.

McMahon owns Olde World Ales, and plans to create an “experiential” business to be known as the Firehouse Tasting Station that would guide visitors through the entire beer-making process.

He will offer beer-tasting, and envisions classes and mini-seminars for those who want to learn more about brewing.

McMahon also said he and the glass-blowing group that operates the Fire House Studio and Gallery in the front part of the building have talked about a collaboration to create a distinctly Langley beer in a distinctly Langley bottle.

His ultimate goal, he added, is to grow his own barley and hops on the island.

“And the whole process is quiet,” he told the council. “Mostly bubbling sounds.”

“It’s going to be a lot of fun,” McMahon added.

“We’re excited to have you here,” Councilwoman Rene Neff said.
