“Lone Lake will have hundreds of sizeable new inhabitants when this year’s fishing season opens.Triploid trout were scheduled to be planted the week of March 26, according to the Department of Fish and Wildlife. The extra large rainbow trout are so named because they have three sets of chromosomes instead of the normal two. This makes them sterile so all their feeding and energy goes into growth rather than reproduction.Lone Lake is scheduled to receive 435 of the big fish, which average 1 1/2 pounds each. Statewide, Fish and Wildlife will be stocking 84,000 triploids, twice the number stocked when the program started last year.The state legislature funded the program to help make up for loss of recreational fishing due to recent reductions in salmon and steelhead opportunities, according to Jim Uehara, who manages Wildlife’s resident native fish program.Of the 77 waters to be stocked this year 53 are in Western Washington and 24 are in Eastern Washington. Lone Lake is the only Island County lake that will receive triploids. The stocking will be repeated in mid-May. “
