Board renews school chief’s contract

Coupeville schools Superintendent Steve King’s three-year contract was renewed this past week by the school district’s board of directors.

The unanimous vote happened during a teleconferenced Coupeville School Board meeting Monday night.

The contract extends King’s employment until June 30, 2023.

King’s annual salary will remain $168,636. The school board voted for no increase in his compesation.

The board entered into an executive session the week before to evaluate King for the final time this school year.

During the final evaluation, King said he asked the board not to give him a raise.

King said in an email that his decision to not request a pay increase was in response to the district’s dire finances and all the future unknowns about state and district finances due to COVID-19.

The school district has already made cuts to staffing for this coming school year because of the virus.
