Gabelein 4, Gathings 1In one of their best-played games this season, South Whidbey’s boys basketball players posted some of their highest scoring and rebounding numbers Thursday night in a home match against Lynnwood that nonetheless counts as a loss in the team stats book.Tim Gabelein put up a game-high 26 points and was backed by Trevor Ellis’ 10 points in a 91-61 loss to the Royals in the first round of the annual Falcon Classic basketball tournament.In a contest that featured not only Gabelein’s scorching, 15-point first half performance, but some great board work by junior George Spivikov on defense, the Falcons were still overpowered by the high-flying Royals, who seemed to score almost at will every time the Falcons closed the scoring gap.Behind from the tip off, the Falcons did keep the game within reach. Down 23-14 after the first quarter, the team notched the pressure up to score 16 points in the second quarter. Unfortunately, Lynnwood scored 25. Keeping the game as close as it was were Tim Gabelein and Ellis, who scored seven of his 10 points in the first half.In the third quarter, the Falcons ratcheted the offense up again, sinking 22 points to the Royals’ 24. With one eight-minute quarter to go, it seemed South Whidbey could pull into contention by game’s end. But the Royals proved to be the better team down the stretch. Led by Jason Mus’ 20 points, five Lynnwood players scored in double digits for the game to keep it out of the Falcons’ reach.The loss to the 3A Royals sent the Falcons into a consolation game against Coupeville Friday night. That game was played after the press deadline for The Record.In JV action, the Falcons also had a rough time with Lynnwood, losing 66-33. The varsity Falcons now have a 0-6 record for the season. “
