“The South Whidbey High School girls tennis team finished their regular season last Wednesday as one of the best teams in the Wesco 3A league. Pretty good for a 2A team.The Falcons downed Monroe 6-1 on the road in last week’s match, which gives them a 13-3 season record as they head into this week’s sub-district playoffs. Winning against the Bearcats were singles players Svenja Koehn, Jenny Newman, Molly Fox, and Kelsey Simmons. In doubles Jenny Saephan and Kylie Bozym took an easy 6-1, 6-1 win in the Number 1 position, then watched as the Falcons’ other two doubles teams struggled a bit. Paige Jolley and Kaitlin King wound up on the losing end of their match, falling 5-7, 6-2, 6-7, while the Number 3 team of Gena Felton and Jaci Gutzmer pulled their match out in the final set 7-6, 4-6, 6-2.With a stellar regular season schedule behind them, the Falcons go into playoffs as the defending 2A state champions. On Thursday, the team travels to Blaine to try to qualify its singles and doubles players for next week’s district tournament in Federal Way. South Whidbey will square off in the sub-district against Blaine and Lakewood, two teams about which Falcon coach Tom Kramer said he knows little. Nonetheless, Kramer said he expects to have several sub-district champions by Thursday night, or if necessary, after a second day of play on Friday. On his singles roster are Jenny Newman and Molly Fox, two players who are new to the varsity lineup this year. In doubles, Kramer has paired Jenny Saephan and Kylie Bozym, as well as the team’s most regular pairing, Jolley and King. All six players could move on to the district meet if they win or place second in their divisions. Kramer said he hopes that is the case, because the team needs as many players as possible at the May 18-19 district meet.Boys tennis back in actionThe girls will not go to Federal Way alone. Three members of the school’s boys tennis team will resume the 2A division’s strange playoff schedule when they make the same trip. Last fall, George Spivikov made it through the 2A sub-district finals, as did the Falcon doubles team of Kevin Ando and Dorian Sidhu. Kramer said the three players will be in shape by May 18, despite a five-month layoff from the sport of tennis. “
