South Whidbey (Bates, Poolman, Binford, McGillen) 52.04 A cadre of South Whidbey boys sprint and distance runners made entries into the high school’s record books for the second week in a row Saturday as they competed against 50 of the best track teams in the state at Shoreline. At the same time in Kirkland, the Falcon girls had a tough time against stiff competition at the Lake Washington Invitational, eking out just a few high placings in the elite meet.Although neither team came home with a team championship or an event winner, the weekend’s competition inspired South Whidbey’s athletes to push their limits as the regular season rolls toward a close. Junior Braden Giswold was the story of the meet for the Falcons at Shorline. For the second time in eight days, Giswold set a school record in the 1,600, besting his own record by two seconds with a 4:21.7, sixth-place performance. Also setting new records were the sprint medley team of Andy Wills, Jesse Ellison, Joe Candelario and Matt Steiner, and the distance medley team of Brandon Bilyeu, Bruce Hymas, Braden Giswold, and Brett Perkins. The distance medley team’s time of 10:40.0 was a full 14 seconds faster than the performance the same runners produced at last week’s South Whidbey Invitational. Also coming up with solid placings at Shoreline were Colin Murphy in the high jump, Jesse Ellison in the 100 and 200, Brian Moote in the triple jump and shot put, and Brett Perkins in the 800 and long jump.At Lake Washington, junior Andrea McGillen followed up her Athlete of the Meet performance at the South Whidbey Invitational by earning the highest individual Falcon placing of the day. She took second in the triple jump with a 35-4 1/2 effort, soaring more than three inches farther than she managed the week before. In the pole vault, however, she was not able to equal her 7-6 leap of the previous week and did not place. McGillen is the first South Whidbey girl to compete in the pole vault. The only other girls to grab placing points were McGillen, Dail Bates, Melissa Poolman and Lindsay Binford in the 4×100 relay. They placed ninth overall with a time of 52.04. The Falcons compete next on Thursday in a North Cascades Conference quadrangular at Lynden Christian High School.”
