Oak Harbor police arrested a man for allegedly burglarizing businesses and shooting out locks with a handgun, according to court documents.

Last week, officers investigated break-ins at Best Friends Veterinary Center, Golden Services and The Mill at the Kasteel, according to an officer’s report.

A surveillance video of the veterinary office showed a burglar in boots and a hoodie carrying a pistol in a holster. The man can be seen shooting at drawers in the reception area and then opening them, pulling out cashier tills. Officers recovered 9mm brass shells and a deformed bullet from inside the drawers.

In addition, officers investigated when someone shot a front door lock at the Golden Services business. A brass shell and bullet fragment were recovered.

The police report indicates that a window was broken at The Mill. An employee at the nearby hotel saw a guest, later identified as 29-year-old Jerald Fitzgerald, dump a bag of trash over a fence behind the building, according to the police report. The employee looked inside the bag and found a cashier till.

Officers went to a room where Fitzgerald was staying with other people and observed that he and his clothes matched the burglar in the surveillance video, the report states. The officers arrested Fitzgerald, searched him and found a 9mm round and a check from the veterinary center in his pocket, according to the report.

Fitzgerald appeared in Island County Superior Court Nov. 4. The judge found probable cause to believe Fitzgerald committed the crimes of burglary in the first degree, unlawful possession of a firearm in the second degree and theft in the second degree and set his bail at $25,000.
