A burn ban is now in effect in Island County, the fire marshal announced.
The Type I ban prohibits outdoor burning of natural debris, even with a permit. Recreational fires in a fire pit are still allowed, according to a press release. Barbecue grills using propane or briquettes and self-contained camp stoves are also allowed.
The decision was made because of reduced moisture levels, low humidity and warmer weather, which have increased the risk of fire, according to Sheriff Rick Felici, who serves as the county fire marshal.
The ban will stay in effect until further notice. Violations may be reported to 911.
