The group of Whidbey Island teens received standing ovations for their presentation of Safe Street, a song written especially by songwriter Keith Colley for the Safe Street organization and the event’s theme of keeping kids and neighborhoods safer. Last year’s Safe Streets event presented the Can-Do-Kids performing troupe of youngsters eight to 13 years of age.Drawing a crowd of 5,000 kids and families attending the event in costumes, the event celebrated the Halloween spirit with games, contests and a night of entertainment, with Can-Do-Sound taking the stage for four performances that featured hip-hop style and gymnastic flips.Selected from open auditions, the six member performing troupe of Whidbey Island teens includes South Whidbey High School students Katrina Ellison, Jamee Brown, Karla Gilbert, Gena Felton and Melody Ward, plus lead vocalist Cameron Wieldraayer from Oak Harbor High School.The song Safe Street, was choreographed by Susan Vanderwood, with vocal coaching by Linda McLean. Collaborating with Charlene Brown, the Can-Do! Project’s chief choreographer, the group worked diligently to prepare for their highly successful debut, said director Linda Colley.
