Chamber provides free fair bus on Sunday

The Langley Chamber of Commerce has stepped in where Island Transit could not tread to supply free bus rides to Island County Fairgoers on Sunday.

“Sunday’s free bus routeFree rides to the Island County Fairgrounds will be provided by a Whidbey Tours bus on Sunday, Aug. 19. Here is the hourly route it will take beginning at 10:45 a.m. at the Clinton ferry dock (meeting the 10:30 a.m. ferry from Mukilteo).* Pick up riders at the ferry dock.* Proceed to South Whidbey High School on Maxwelton Road, to pick up fair-goers parked at the high school.* Stop at the fairgrounds.* Loop through downtown Langley.* Return to the fairgrounds.* Proceed to the SWHS parking lot.* Stop at the Clinton Park & Ride IF FLAGGED, just up the highway from the post office at the regular Island Transit stop.* Return to the ferry dock to pick up ferry passengers who left Mukilteo on the 11:30 a.m. boat. The Sunday service will continue all day, with the exception of a break period from 2:15 to 3:30 p.m.. The last bus will leave the fairgrounds at 7:30 p.m.The Langley Chamber of Commerce has stepped in where Island Transit could not tread to supply free bus rides to Island County Fairgoers on Sunday. For 14 years Island Transit provided free Sunday service during the fair, but this year fair organizers declined to pay the $1,500 the service cost. The money also went for extra late-night service throughout the fair. The news that Island Transit was out of the picture this year caught Langley businesses by surprise, said Chamber Manager Loretta Martin on Tuesday morning. The first she heard about it was Saturday when she read it in The South Whidbey Record.Despite the short notice, with the fair opening on Wednesday, Martin said Chamber leaders rallied behind the idea of providing private bus service. People are used to coming over from the mainland on Sunday, she said. If they’re stranded on the ferry dock — that’s not good. The Chamber hired Whidbey Tours of Coupeville to provide one of its blue and silver Mercedes buses next Sunday. Martin said the cost will be approximately $500. One of the first major contributors to the cause was The South Whidbey Record, she said.Beginning at 10:45 a.m. Sunday, the bus will provide hourly free service from the ferry dock to the South Whidbey High School parking lot, to the fair and then downtown Langley. There wasn’t time for a more extensive route, Martin said. It was as much as we could put together at the last minute. We’re trying to relieve some of the trafic pressure. Had we known earlier, we could have worked out something more all-encompassing.Martin said people coming from North Whidbey on Sunday would be wise to park in the South Whidbey High School parking lot, located a short way down the Maxwelton Road exit to Langley, and take the free bus to the fair. Parking around the fairgrounds is scant and the area is highly congested. “
