Oak Harbor has reviewed the remaining CARES grant applications submitted by small businesses seeking to recoup losses caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Of the remaining 15 applications that required further review by the appointed CARES grant selection committee, 10 qualified for relief funding totaling $65,770, according to city documents.

Mayor Pro Tem Beth Munns thanked the city administrator and the CARES grant selection committee for their efforts in reviewing the funds.

“We truly are, mayor, reaching your goal of getting out the money as quick as possible,” Munns said during Wednesday’s teleconferenced city meeting.

The CARES grant selection committee consisted of Daren Cook, Bill Larsen, Eric Marshall, Maria McGee, Wendy Shingleton and Ronnie Wright.

Council members Erica Wasinger and Tara Hizon acted as liaisons between the committee and the city council.

Similar to the first group, the majority of the businesses and nonprofits qualified for the maximum $10,000 relief funding. Nonprofits were not advertised as being eligible for funding and are not mentioned in the resolution.

Three of the applicants withdrew from the process and two were rejected. As a result, $23,660 in funds remain.

According to city documents, city staff will work with the Greater Oak Harbor Chamber of Commerce to provide personal protective equipment to businesses and develop programs such as the Open Air Thursdays.
