“Maya Nakano of Clinton won the 12-and-up division of the Washington State Level 4 gymnastics meet in April.Clinton’s Maya Nakano became a state gymnastics champion this spring, winning the balance beam and floor exercise events as well as the all-around competition at the Washington State Level 4 gymnastics championships April 28 at Inglemoor High School. Nakano, 13, placed first out of 31 competitors. She won in the grandest fashion possible by winning in both individual and all-around events. A gymnast since age 4, Nakano has trained at Seattle’s Little Gym, the Seattle Gymnastics Academy, Island Gymnastics, and Mukilteo’s Gymagine Gymnastics. Nakano’s mother, Nancy Nolan, credit’s Island Gymnastics coach Betty Rogers for sparking her daughter’s interest in the sport.The state championship caps Nakano’s first season of competitive gymnastics. Her teammates at Gymagine Gymnastics also noticed her hard work and voted her Most Inspirational. She also received Coach’s Choice and Hardest Worker awards from her coaches. Maya is the daughter of Nolan, who lives in Clinton, and Kenichi Nakano of Seattle. She is a student at the Whidbey Island Waldorf School in Clinton. “
