But that’s what happened to the South Whidbey girls basketball team last weekend.On Friday night they hosted the state’s number two ranked Class AA team, Nooksack Valley, and lost 60-36.Saturday night the number four ranked Lynden Christian Lyncs came to Erikson Gymnasium, and the Falcons lost 51-34.We knew it would be a tough weekend, said coach Nancy Ricketts, whose Falcons are now 2-7 in North Cascades Conference competition. But she said both games would have been closer if only a decent percentage of Falcon shots had fallen.The outlook was particularly hopeful Friday against the Pioneers. The Falcons overcame a big 16-4 first quarter to cut the margin to only 5 points at halftime. They came out real aggressive and got some steals, Ricketts said of the visitors. But the Falcons regrouped, started working the ball inside for good shots, and made a game of it.In the third quarter the Falcons narrowed the deficit to only 3 points at 31-28, but then the roof caved in. The Pioneers, aided by South Whidbey’s suddenly-cold shooting, went in a 19-0 run to put away the 13th consecutive win of their so-far undefeated season.The cold shooting syndrome carried over to Saturday for the Falcons. Lynden Christian, which entered the game with a 6-1 league mark, was held to a modest 51 points by a hard-working Falcon defense, but the Falcons offense produced only 36 points as the top scorer was Hilary Wick with her second consecutive 11 point night. In both games, she was the only Falcon in double figures.Ricketts said the Falcons’ goal is still to make the playoffs, something which six of the nine league teams will accomplish. With two wins, South Whidbey is only one game behind Meridian for the final playoff berth.The Falcons could make some playoff headway this week, although they will have to win away from home to do it. But they beat both teams earlier this year. On Friday South Whidbey travels to Sultan and Saturday they take the long bus ride to Blaine. “
