There are opportunities on South Whidbey to learn everything from language to health care or how to build a house.

“CLASSESBEGINNING SIGN LANGUAGE: Five-session classes in American Sign Language are being offered in Langley on a weekly schedule, with lessons beginning at 7 p.m. and running 1 1/2 hours. Students will learn both fingerspelling and signs. A class for Advanced Beginners is now available, to meet once a week. Contact instructor Susan Ishikawa at 221-0383. HOME BUILDING: So you want to build a house, do you? This first in a series of classes for people planning, building, or remodeling their home is being held at the Langley United Methodist Fellowship hall, Jan. 12, from 7-9pm. Topics deal with design and timeline issues and working with architects, contractors, and the county. Speakers include Jean Steinbrecher, architect, Ed Gemko of Island Construction, and Bob Dalton of JBL Construction. Cost is $15, and goes to support Hearts and Hammers. GLASS BEADS: Coupeville Arts Center will host professional beadmaker Andrea Guarino in “Beginning Glass Beads,” Jan. 15-16. In this exciting one-day workshop, you will create glass beads with a propane/oxygen torch using the mandrel-wound technique. You’ll receive a basic knowledge of the tools and materials used, and appropriate safety measures. After you have mastered making a round bead, decoration techniques such as applying dots, combing and making twisted canes will be taught. An individualized class designed to introduce you to the art form of beadmaking, as well as working warm glass. Class fee is $150 for members, $170 for non-members, plus a materials fee of $15. LIVING WITH CANCER: The Cancer Care Committee of Whidbey General Hospital is offering the Living with Cancer Support Group, to meet Wednesdays from 7-8:30 p.m. in the hospital Board room, Jan. 19-March 1. The first session is “What is Cancer?” on Jan. 19: what cancer is, diagnosis and staging, diagnostic procedures, treatments, and more information. Facilitated by Carla Jolley, with guest speakers. Call the hospital for information, 321-5151.HOME BUILDING: “Exterior materials,” Jan. 19, 7-9 p.m., at Hanson’s Building Supply — Explore the many new products and old but unfamiliar building materials rather than the traditional T-111 over stick framing: stone, concrete, brick, hybrids, timber framing, post and beam, stress-skin panels, prefab walls, rammed earth, cob, straw bale, earth and sod, myriad roofing options, and more. LIVING WITH CANCER: This Whidbey General Hospital weekly support group continues Jan. 26 with “Nutrition and Nutritional Concerns,” co-facilitated by Erin Simms, dietitian and Carla Jolley, home health clinical nurse specialist. They will discuss practical suggestions and eating hints for weight gain or loss; address symptoms of poor appetite; taste changes; nausea; treatment concerns; and nutritional supplements available. The Living with Cancer group meets in the hospital Board room from 7-8:30 p.m. each Wednesday through March 1. Register one week in advance.TUMBLING TOTS: This combination of beginning tumbling on mats with a series of fun exercises is geared to release excess energy for the 3-5 age group. Dates: Mondays, Jan 31-Mar. 13; time: 12:30-1:30; at Bayview Hall; cost: $40.DIVORCE: Trinity Lutheran Church will host a divorce recovery workshop on Tuesdays, Feb. 8 through March 14, 6:30-8:30 p.m., featuring videotaped lectures Dr. Bill Flanagan, who has been conducting such workshops since 1977. The sessions will provide mutual support in a non-threatening environment, designed to help in the difficult adjustments to a broken marriage, with small group discussions following. Flanagan has degrees from the University of Redlands and Princeton Theological and Fuller Theological seminaries.
