Council approves bids for wayfaring signs

Better directions for visitors needed

The Langley City Council approved taking bids to create a better visitor information system into and around Langley at its Monday meeting.

Known as “wayfinding,” effective signs, symbols and other cues can help guide people in and around a city and lead them to amenities and businesses. But the opposite can also happen if the signs, or placement of the signs, is not clear.

Wayfinding goes beyond just signs. It could include additional help for visitors, such as maps, symbols, information booths or sidewalk guides answering questions, which are solutions other tourist towns use.

Discussion about the ambiguity of some of Langley’s tourism signs has been ongoing. Current signage is cluttered and lacks both cohesion and precision, some say.

Suggestions for a more comprehensive wayfaring strategy were taken at a public meeting in November.

About a half dozen people had comments or suggestions, including creating walking maps or fine tuning Langley’s visitor brochures.

Pointing people in the right direction to parking was one point all agreed upon.

Helping businesses, increasing tourism and bolstering Langley’s brand are also goals of developing a new system.
