“A busy road into Langley is being called by the wrong name, according to a couple of amateur local historians.Brooks Hill Road is so named on maps and in the local vernacular, but that is incorrect, say Ed Cohn and his wife, Dorothy Cohn. Dorothy was born on South Whidbey as part of the pioneering Gildow family.The family the road is named after spelled their name B-R-O-O-K-E, the Cohns say. And they have proof in the form of turn-of-the-century registers that contain the signatures of several members of the Brooke family.Island County is in the process of changing some road names. The Cohns would like to see the correct Brooke name restored. Then people can accurately drive down Brooke Hill Road.There is at least one other incorrect road name in Langley, according to the Cohns. DeBruyn Avenue is misspelled. The family after which that street is named owned Oak Harbor Freight, and the correct spelling is DeBryn. The Cohns would also like to see that error fixed as soon as it is feasible. “
