Crash run into post offices, Dollar Tree

A spate of vehicles crashing into buildings is just an anomaly, according to Oak Harbor Fire Chief Ray Merrill.

Last Thursday, a teal Honda Accord crashed into the Oak Harbor Post Office on City Beach Street, marking the third instance of a car crashing into a building in a week. No one was injured in the crashes.

Merrill said the post office’s concrete wall prevented the building from sustaining serious damage. The Honda was less fortunate.

Earlier in the week, the Dollar Tree on Midway Boulevard was hit by an SUV. Merrill said the building was still functional and damage mostly cosmetic. Over the years, the Dollar Tree has been the site of car-versus-building accidents.

In Coupeville last month, a car punched through the wall of the post office on Coveland Street.

According to Central Whidbey Fire and Rescue Deputy Chief Charlie Smith, no one was injured.

The wall of the post office needed new studs but the building remained functional.

Smith said the vehicle “hit the building and then just bounced right back into its parking space.”
