“South Whidbey volunteers will make sure tomorrow that everyone enjoys Thanksgiving dinner, either in the company of many others or at their own homes or work places.American Legion Post 141 invites everyone to their big log hall on Highway 525 anytime between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Chief organizer Dick McClellan has amassed a large collection of turkeys, hams and all the fixings — enough to serve well over 100 free meals.The Legion dinner attracts not only the needy, but also many people who simply want to enjoy the festive holiday in the company of others.For those not able to leave their homes for whatever reason, the VFW has the holiday meal answer. Head chef Tom Arhontas will will be stationed in the school district’s bus barn kitchen, turning out turkey, ham or leg of lamb for shut-ins. Complete meals will be transported by the VFW Mobile Turkey Unit to wherever they are needed, even to public servants who have to work on the holidays. It’s not too late to make arrangements. Many businesses will be closed Thanksgiving Day, but they will open Friday in anticipation of another busy Christmas shopping season. “
