There’s something out of the ordinary on Whidbey Island, and it’s here for modern dancers.
The dancers who’ve attained it have made it extraordinary.
It’s a chance at a dream: A memorial scholarship created in the honor of a dedicated woman with a passion for modern dance — Barbara Hatch LeBert.
This dedicated dancer was involved with modern dance at its inception. Barbara Hatch LeBert toured with the highly-revered Hanya Holmes, known for her integration of dance and story in Broadway musicals.
“Even after Barbara didn’t dance anymore, she wanted to remain connected,†Gordon LeBert said. “She wanted to foster interest in dance on the island.â€
The modern dance endowment scholarship compliments these efforts.
Several young dancers on Whidbey have a vigor for dance similar to Barbara Hatch LeBert’s.
“Barbara had very special ideas about dance — how it is performed, and what it means,†LeBert said. “It meant a great deal to her. It was a form of expression.â€
Modern dancers have different concepts about how space should filled.
“How you use movement in the space is a language in itself,†LeBert said.
After Barbara passed away, Le
Bert decided to form a scholarship in her honor to help young people on Whidbey Island pursue their goals with modern dance.
