Turn a misshapen gourd into a piglet or give a corncob eyes and call it an alien at the veggie critter workshop. The annual garden critter creation workshop sponsored by the Deer Lagoon Grange is set for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 12 at the South Whidbey Tilth Farmers’ Market.

“Grange Bux” will be given free to children 16 and under to buy odd-looking vegetables, fruits and miscellaneous material for creating a creature to enter in the Whidbey Island Fair. Grange Bux are valued at one dollar apiece and the Grange will reimburse each vendor for bux collected.

Farmers will have their weirdest and most misshapen vegetables and fruits at the market. Crafts people may have odd pieces of yarn, fleece, wood and more. Since the Sheep to Shawl spinning and dyeing event is also that Sunday, there should be plenty of wool scraps to work with as well.

All children are welcome to join in the fun. Volunteers to assist children are needed also.

The booklet is also available around the island in libraries, stores and businesses. Entries earning ribbons receive cash awards.

Garden critters, vegetable and fruit entries must be brought to the Whidbey Island Fairgrounds in Langley, between 1 and 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14. Entry forms can be filled out at the fair or online at www.whidbeyislandfair.com.

Come to the fruits and vegetable area in the Burrier Shed numbered nine on the fair map. It’s the third building from the big pole building or second from the carnival area.
