“Following Island County’s lead, the state Department of Natural Resources has instigated its own outdoor burn ban.Island County declared its month-long burn ban on July 20. The ban outlawed all types of outdoor burning, with the exceptions of camp and cooking fires built in fire pits. However, the ban did not apply to burns permitted by the DNR. The agency issues burning permits to people involved in the forestry industry. Covering fires to dispose of unwanted forest products on forestry lands, the permits remained in effect during the county’s ban.But conditions have become so dry in Island County that the agency changed its mind. Paul Busch, the assistant fire chief for Fire Protection District 3, said that as of last Wednesday, not even a DNR permit gives the landowner the right to burn.The ban was called for an indeterminate amount of time.
