Earthquake felt on Whidbey Island

People across Whidbey Island were awakened by an earthquake early Friday morning.

The magnitude 4.6 earthquake was recorded at 2:51 a.m. and originated from 15 miles below the Three Lakes area of Snohomish County, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It was followed minutes later by a 3.5 magnitude aftershock near Monroe.

The initial shaking was felt over a large area, from Yakima to Vancouver, B.C.

On Whidbey, a few dozen people reported their experiences online to the Geological Survey, but no damage was reported.

Nine people in Clinton, which was 40 kilometers from the temblor, reported feeling the shaking. In addition, it was reported by 13 people in Langley, three people in Coupeville and 16 in Oak Harbor.

Dozens of people on Whidbey-based social media were discussing the shaking and whether it woke them up. Some people were alarmed while others shrugged it off. Apparently most dogs didn’t notice.

Only one person called 911 to report the rattling on Whidbey. A woman on Kettle Street in Oak Harbor said she felt it and wanted a call about earthquake safety protocols.
