EPA is back testing at landfill

The federal Environmental Protection Agency returned to an old dump site on Cultus Bay Road last week to take groundwater samples.

“The federal Environmental Protection Agency returned to an old dump site on Cultus Bay Road last week to take groundwater samples.Michael Szerlog, EPA on-site coordinator, said neighborhood wells adjoining the property are being tested for solvents, herbicides and pesticides not previously tested for by the county or state. In past studies, the area has been found to be free of hazardous chemicals. The EPA stepped in because of a data gap in records pertaining to the landfill. In a few weeks the results will be back, Szerlog said. The big issue is to make sure the residents aren’t impacted. All residents will get a full report of the results. The groundwater samples were taken from approximately five parcels of land, Szerlog said. The EPA is following up on unsubstantiated reports that toxic chemicals may have been dumped in the old landfill some 24 years ago. The landfill was closed in 1978 and has since overgrown with blackberry vines and alder trees. It was the EPA’s second trip the site. In July a reconnaissance visit was made to determine what should be done to assess the site. “
