“Island County Superior Court officials are trying to take a little bit of the stress out of divorces and child custody battles.Court Administrator Delilah George said the court is in the process of hiring a courthouse facilitator to help people who can’t afford an attorney navigate through the legal maze.At the same time, George said, she’s working on other ways of making the new courthouse more user-friendly. The facilitator will be working only with pro se litigants in family court. In other words, the court helper will aid people involved in such cases as divorces, modification of child support, setting up parenting plans or legal separations.George said many people represent themselves in family court cases instead of hiring an attorney. This is especially true of women, who tend to have less money than men. Generally over 50 percent of dissolution filings are pro se, she said.George said the court facilitator will be able to help people fill out the correct paperwork, file the information with the court, set up court hearings and explain the process. But under law, the facilitator can’t give legal advice. The facilitator will have a desk at the court administrator’s office and will work only one day a week, at least to start. The position, George said, is nothing new in the state. In fact, Island County is one of the last counties to start a court facilitator program.Thirty-eight out of 39 counties have either a facilitator or a pending program, she said.In addition, George said, she set up a self-help center in the hallway outside the courtrooms. The rack of pamphlets has a wide variety of information packets, a list of local attorneys and helpful Web sites. The court administrator’s office will also be selling pre-made-up packets of court documents that are specific for Island and San Juan County courts, she said.To top things off, George said, she wants to have a computer and printer available for public use. The computer could provide people with access to court-related Web sites or a software program with a court document assembly program.I’m not sure where it’s going to be located, she said, but I’ll find a spot. “
