“Attention all islanders: Get your floats decorated, your horses costumed, your pooper-scoopers lined up. The deadline to enter the Island County Fair parade is Aug. 11 at 4 p.m. The parade annually attracts a host of participants: 4-H groups with dogs and other animals; wagons adorned with flowers and banners; fire engines, antique cars, tots in costume and politicians waving from convertibles. And this year there is a new category: Ugly Trucks (along with the political entries, they won’t be judged for prizes). There will, however, be a special award for the pickup person (scooper) with the most creativity. There are several requirements: Vehicles and animal drawn vehicles must have brakes and be in excellent mechanical condition, with fire extinguishers on each. Horse entries must have a clean up unit. Racing of vehicles or animals is prohibited. Parade entrants are asked to conform to the parade theme of Preserving the Past for the Future. The 10 a.m. parade on Aug. 19 will begin at Visser’s parking lot (Third and Park), proceed through downtown Langley, and pass the middle school to enter the Fairgrounds. For an official entry form and a listing of all the rules, call Mary Jane Donohoe at 331-0724. “
