Assistant coach Jim Leierer, who was head coach from the mid-’50s until he stepped down after the 1981 season, remembered a 70-0 loss to Sultan many years ago, according to Heggenes.Meridian improved to 7-0 while South Whidbey fell to 2-5 overall, 2-4 in league. It was evident early that the Falcons hadn’t cured the fumble problems that resulted in a 53-0 loss to Lynden Christian the week before. South Whidbey received the kickoff and marched for a couple of first downs, but then a fumble gave the Trojans the ball. One play, long bomb, score, said Heggenes, describing Meridian’s opening one-play drive.South Whidbey went on to commit five fumbles in the first half alone. Meridian didn’t need the help. They have tremendous team speed, Heggenes said. Their linemen are as fast as anybody on our squad. Their skills are exceptional.Without the turnovers the score might have been respectable, but with them the halftime score was 52-0. Whether Meridian needed to score 29 more points in the second half is questionable. The Trojans threw the ball 15 times in the second half, and most were completed. They went up and caught the football, Heggenes said. It just got ridiculous. The Meridian coach later apologized, he said, but it was a hollow apology. The Falcons were not without outstanding efforts. Chris Hezel was all over the field making tackles, Heggenes said, while defensive end Aaron McCabe made his debut as a punt returner and almost broke two long runs. The Falcons were relieved to leave, but the trip home was no picnic. The team bus overheated and barely limped up the Greenbank hill. They arrived home at 1:45 a.m.This Friday the competition remains stiff but at least the Falcons will be playing at Waterman Field. The opponent will be Mount Baker, which played a close game with Lynden Christian last week, eventually falling 14-7. “

"Even with some outstanding efforts, South Whidbey was unable to touch Meridian. They come home to play at Waterman Field this Friday. "
