“South Whidbey High School’s golf teams will both send representatives to the state tournament May 21-22 at Semiahmoo and Loomis Trail near Blaine.Representing the Falcon girls will be freshman Taryn Langlois, sophomore Adrienne Hawley and junior Anne Zontine.Falcon boys advancing to state include senior Alec Osenbach and freshman Jeff Strong.Bi-district tournaments were played Thursday. Falcon girls coach Tom Sage said Langlois was the only freshman from the two leagues who qualified for state. She shot a 92, which tied her for fourth place overall with teammate Zontine. Hawley came in at 96, good for sixth overall.There were a couple of surprises for the Falcons. Freshman Hailie Mansfield led the team all year but shot a 103 and didn’t make the cut of 99 for state. She shot a practice round the day before that would have put her third overall, Sage said.Meanwhile, Zontine did better than expected. She came out of nowhere to take fourth place, Sage said. She had an exceptional round.Hawley impressively advanced to state by scoring about 5 strokes better than her average, while Langlois did what she needed to do, Sage said.Mount Baker won the team scoring with 68 points, Meridian scored 67 and South Whidbey 48, followed by about a dozen other teams.Sage was pleased with the team’s overall performance. To get three to state is great, he said. Last year, only Amy Brunner represented the Falcons at state.The Falcon boys played Thursday in bi-district competition at Bellingham Golf and Country Club, competing among 14 teams from the North Cascades and Nisqually conferences.The Falcons were led by two state placers, senior Alec Osenbach whose 84 was ninth overall, and freshman Jeff Strong, whose 85 tied him for 12th place. The top 14 advanced to state.Coach Mick Heggenes had hoped to send at least three to state, but it was not to be. Senior Andy Heintz finished out his high school career with his head held high. After ballooning to 47 on the front nine, he finished with a 41 on the back nine. He had a great back nine, a solid career and solid year, Heggenes said.Also for the Falcons, Reed Dettrich shot an 89 and Bryce Hansen a 91.In team scoring, the Falcons were disappointed with their third place finish. We thought we had a legitimate shot at first, Heggenes said. Lynden Christian finished with 230 points, Mount Baker scored 209.5, and South Whidbey had 209, followed by the rest of the teams. “
