“A couple of downpours at Useless Bay didn’t stop the South Whidbey girls golf team from turning in a good performance at the North Cascades Conference tournament Thursday.The girls got drenched twice, said Falcon coach Tom Sage. Besides the drenching they had to deal with standing water on several greens, but still finished second from among six teams.Meridian dominated with 523 total strokes and placed five golfers among the top 10 finishers, each of whom received a medal. That’s pretty hard to beat, said Sage. South Whidbey was second with 585 followed by Mount Baker with 605, Nooksack Valley 636 and Blaine 664.The individual medalist was Meridian’s Beth Stockholm with 92. Falcon Amy Brunner was 4th overall with 105, while the other Falcon to win a medal was Danielle Dumke whose 113 was good for 10th place. She wasn’t very happy, said Sage. Dumke shot 88 in her final regular season match and was hoping for better, but that’s golf. Also scoring for the Falcons at league were Adrienne Hawley at 115, Calandra Keck 117 and Maria Zontine 135. On Monday, the Falcon girls ended their regular golf season in a three-way league match. Meridian won with a 537, South Whidbey was second with 564, and Mount Baker was third with 537.The Falcon seniors led the way at the Lake Padden course. Dumke shot her season-low with an 88, Brunner scored an even 100, and Keck shot a personal best 122. Freshman Hawley continued her steady improvement with a 116.The post-season continues next Thursday as the Falcons travel to the bi-district match at North Bellingham Golf & Country Club. There will be 13 teams and only the top 11 players will advance to state. It’s very competitive, said Sage. But it should be a lot of fun.”
