“South Whidbey’s basketball girls lost in overtime at Granite Falls Tuesday to fall to 2-4 in North Cascades Conference play. The Tigers improved to 4-2.Both teams were cold coming out of the chute. Combined with good defense by both sides, that resulted in a 15-14 halftime lead for the Falcons. We were 5 for 37 (from the field) in the first half, said Falcon coach Nancy Ricketts. It’s a good thing we were playing good defense.South Whidbey was outscored 15-9 in the third period, but came back in the final regulation stanza to produce a torrid 20-point quarter. The Falcons took the lead by 1 point with 3 seconds remaining. At that juncture a Granite Falls player was fouled and she made one of her two attempts to send the game into overtime.Ricketts watched as her player corps was depleted quickly in the extra period. Post players Hayley Gabelein, Lindsey Binford and Sam Watson all fouled out, leaving center Hilary Wick with little support in her battles under the boards.Ricketts also missed guard Julie Robinson, who played her best game of the season Friday against Meridian, but twisted her ankle and had to sit out the Granite Falls game.In the final period, the Tigers pulled ahead to take a hard-fought 58-53 victory.Falcon center Hilary Wick did everything in her power to pull the game out. She scored 17 points, snared 15 rebounds, blocked 3 shots and grabbed 5 steals. It was by far her best game of the season, said Ricketts.Last night the Falcons played at Mount Baker. Next week they spend at home against the league’s top teams, hosting Nooksack Valley on Friday and Lynden Christian on Saturday. “
