Falcon golfers make mark at state

"South Whidbey's Alec Osenbach, left, and Jeff Strong teamed up to finish sixth at the 2A state golf tournament this week. "

“Maria Zontine, left, and Taryn Langlois, along with teammate Adrienne Hawley (not pictured), turned in nice performances at state and will anchor a strong Falcon team next year.South Whidbey’s boys and girls golf teams made a fine showing at their respective state tournaments held Monday and Tuesday at Blaine. The two Falcon boys, senior Alec Osenbach and freshman Jeff Strong, turned in outstanding play on Monday to make the final round where they finished sixth overall among the state’s 2A schools. It was a very good tournament for our guys, said coach Mick Heggenes. The Falcons missed fifth place and a team trophy by only one stroke.Individually, Strong finished 11th overall and Osenbach 17th. Tournament winner was Lynden Christian which, like South Whidbey, represented the North Cascades Conference. On the first day at the Semiahmoo course Strong shot an impressive 37 on the first nine, which tied him for second at the turn. His 44 on the back nine gave him a total of 81.On day two at Loomis Trail, Strong turned in back-to-back 39s, to finish with a 78.Osenbach was his consistent self on day one at Semiahmoo, totaling 78 with a 39 on each nine. Putter problems at Loomis Trail led to a day two decline, when he shot a 43, 42 for an 85.The tournament began with 40 players from about 30 schools. The top 20 finishers and ties went on to round two, and each school needed at least two golfers in the final round to count in the team scoring.Heggenes said he will miss Osenbach’s present on the team next year. He showed up out of nowhere as a sophomore and was number four (on the team), number two last year and number one this year, he said. He’s been Mr. Consistent. The coach expects even better play from freshman Strong next year. He really found himself at the tournament, he said. He hadn’t shot in the 70s in a tournament, until the state experience. I just look for super things from Jeff.Girls nearly make the cutFor South Whidbey’s girls team, the drama at state came on the first day when the trio was holding out hope to the last minute that they would make the cut.Falcons Maria Zontine, a junior, Adrienne Hawley, a sophomore, and Taryn Langlois, a freshman, scored identical 103s at Semiahmoo on Monday. The score of 103 was good enough for 20th place and a berth in the second round for almost the entire day. Coach Tom Sage said the final golfer of the day shot an unexpectedly good round of 99, forcing all the golfers with 103 into 21st place and out of the tournament. It was amazing, Sage said. When she shot a 99, there was a big sort of groan from the Falcons and several others who had scored 103. South Whidbey had to go home after a long, nine-hour day hoping to make the cut.Still, Sage was pleased with the Falcons’ state performance and with their overall season. At the beginning of the year, he said, he never imagined he would take three of his young golfers to the state tournament. And all three will return next year. Only Hawley had state experience, having gone as an alternate last year.At state, Sage said Zontine and Hawley both turned in rounds that were among their best of the season. Langlois, suffering from freshman jitters, ballooned to a 57 in the first 9 holes, which was one of the poorer scores of the day. But she turned it around on the back nine with a 46 that nearly put her into the second round. It was a great back nine score, Sage said, pointing out that Langlois was one of only three freshmen in the state who qualified for the tournament. Also returning next year will be another Falcon freshman, Hailie Mansfield, who was the team’s top scorer this year. She hurt her hand late in the season and that injury kept her from doing well in district. It’ll be a strong team next year, Sage said. Not only strong, but intelligent. The Falcon girls were honored by the Washington Interscholastic Athletic Association for their cumulative team grade point average of 3.75. “
