McCabe By Saturday night, South Whidbey’s high school wrestlers were looking for two things: the first team meet victory of the season, and a place to take a nap. Ending what was probably the most physically demanding week of the early season, the Falcons lost a double-dual meet at home against 2000 state champion Mount Baker and Nooksack Valley, then went on to take a top-three finish at the Chief Sealth Tournament Saturday in West Seattle. These meets followed others the previous Tuesday and Saturday and left the wrestlers a bit worn by Saturday. The brightest moments for the Falcons came in individual performances. At Thursday’s double dual, team veterans Bruce Hymas, Seth Long and Brandon Hearn all picked up at least one win. In addition, rookie senior Aaron McCabe earned his fourth victory of the year by pinning a Nooksack opponent at 189 pounds. Taking the most surprising win of the meet was freshman Tom Harris, who beat an experienced Mount Baker opponent with an overtime pin in the 152-pound weight class. Winning the nailbiter award for the meet was senior Bruce Hymas. After pinning his Nooksack opponent in his first match of the night, Hymas struggled with Mount Baker’s Zender. Though less experienced than Zender, Hymas would not be held down. The match stayed a 0-0 tie through most of two periods, until Hymas scored a 1-point escape to go ahead on points. It was the only point scored in the match. That one could have gone either way, Crebbin said. Still, the Falcons’ individual wins did not equal a team win. They lost 42-28 to Nooksack Valley and by a score of 52-21 to Mount Baker. At the Chief Sealth tourney, events were kinder to the Falcon team. Even with four varsity wrestlers out for the day, South Whidbey placed third in the eight-team meet. Five wrestlers, Phil Schorr, Sean Noste, Andy Wills, Chris Martin and Brandon Hern, earned medals in the meet, while many others on the team picked up some of their first wins of the year. Almost everyone got a win, said Coach Crebbin. The Falcons wrestle tonight against Blaine and Meridian on the road. “
