“South Whidbey ended a string of three straight shutouts by finally scoring a touchdown in their final football game of the 2000 season. In the first period at Sultan, senior kickoff receiver Aaron McCabe fielded a kick at the 20, broke toward the left sideline, and sprinted upfield. Thanks to his outstanding speed and several key Falcon blocks, the team finally had a touchdown. They knotted the score at 8-8 with a fake conversion kick. Snap taker Andy Peterson surprised the Turk defense by throwing the ball to Justin Shelton in the endzone for two points. The Falcons finally had reason to celebrate, but the festivities were short-lived. The Turks, who needed the win to advance to the playoffs, mounted a Sherman-tank ground attack that overwhelmed the South Whidbey defense. By halftime the score was 32-8 and the final was 49-8. Sultan gained 350 of its 400 total yards on the ground, while South Whidbey rushed for 118 yards and threw for 76. Sophomore Jeremy Iverson started at quarterback, as he has done since Bryan Wenker broke his finger in the Lynden Christian game.Falcon coach Mick Heggenes finished his 19th season at the helm Friday night, and he’s seen far better years. South Whidbey finished with a 2-7 record, with the wins coming against North Cascades Conference cellar dwellers Granite Falls and Nooksack Valley. We have so many young kids starting we can’t keep things going, Heggenes said, pointing to costly penalties and turnovers that have plagued his team all season. Friday, the only senior offensive starters were Chris Hezel and Mike Helland. Seniors Peterson and McCabe joined Hezel and Helland as starters on the defensive side of the line. The rest were juniors and sophomores, plus outstanding freshman Ben Harris.Heggenes isn’t discouraged by several consecutive substandard seasons even though he’s taken many teams to the playoffs, once advancing to the state quarterfinals in the Tacoma Dome. We’re closer than people think (to winning), he said. It’ll only take one group to turn it around.Heggenes hopes he has that group now in his juniors, sophomores and freshmen. But they’ll have to work at it. It takes a lot of work and dedication, but we’ve got a lot of good young kids, he said. He’d also like to see more students turning out for football. The makings of a team is walking around the halls, he said.Heggenes said his young players are already talking about their off-season plans to get strong and attend football camps. “
