The Turks could be the team to provide it, although on paper they appear far better this year than in the past. Last Friday, Sultan pummeled Granite Falls 50-0 to improved its North Cascades Conference record to 4-3 and overall mark to 4-4. Last year the Turks were 1-8, with their only win coming against South Whidbey.South Whidbey, meanwhile, fell to 2-5 in conference and 2-6 overall after losing their final home game of the year 35-0 last Friday to Mount Baker.The Falcons fought hard, particularly in the first three quarters after which they trailed only 14-0. The pass-happy Mountaineers scored early on a 26-yard throwing play, and tallied again on a 20-yard pass play just before the half. But the Falcon defense kept the visitors’ running game largely in check, and the pass defense was decent except for a few lapses.The Falcon offense was not able to mount a consistent drive. With quarterback Jeremy Iversen at the helm, the Falcons made one fairly deep penetration in the first half, thanks to a 21 yard run by Justin Shelton followed by a nice keeper by Iversen. The Falcons made a crucial first down on 4th and one, followed by a 6-yard Shelton scamper to inside the Mountaineer 30. But there the drive fizzled, ending on an incomplete pass on 4th down. Punter Aaron McCabe kept the Mountaineers deep in their own territory with several outstanding kicks.The third period was scoreless, but the Mountaineers scored three times in the final period to win easily. The visitors finished the game with 263 yards through the air.In other conference games last week, undefeated Lynden Christian and Meridian both won, setting up a major season-ending showdown this week between two of the top teams in the state. “
