“The South Whidbey Falcons were well represented on the 2000 All-Conference football team selected by coaches in the 2A North Cascades Conference.Two of the Falcons made first team, led by senior defensive lineman Chris Hezel. Hezel, who stands 6-1 and weighs 220 pounds, led his team in tackles, but his influence went far beyond that, said coach Mick Heggenes. He’s a leader on and off the field, the coach said. Hezel was also a nominee to the All-State game to be played in Yakima. It’s an honor, Heggenes said. It’s the first time in a few years a Falcon has been nominated for the game. A selection committee picks the actual players for the game.Also making first team All Conference was Aaron McCabe, a converted soccer player who made his first and last high school football season a memorable one. McCabe’s leg impressed everyone as he averaged 41.2 yards on over 40 punts for the season. Some of them were real boomers, said Heggenes. Good hang time, he added. McCabe displayed other talents later in the season, particular with a long punt return for a touchdown in the final game. Heggenes could only wish that McCabe had played football for more than just his senior season. He would have been all-conference as more than a kicker, he said. McCabe is wrestling this winter.Justin Shelton was named second team All Conference by the coaches. He’s the only sophomore, Heggenes said. It’s a pretty nice honor. Shelton was selected for his defensive talents as an outside linebacker. He was also South Whidbey’s leading rusher on offense as he averaged over 5 yards per carry. “
