Falcons rewrite school track records

“When South Whidbey High School’s boys and girls track teams packed their stuff onto the bus to return from the Pasco Invitational Saturday night, they did it knowing that three school records had fallen that day and that one other stands only on the most precipitous footing.Running against more than 60 West Coast high school teams in the biggest and fastest meet of the year – including the state meet – the Falcons made a good accounting for themselves, scoring points in three events and placing about a dozen athletes in the top 10 in events stacked with athletes who might one day compete at the college and even Olympic level. Most successful were the boys and girls distance medley teams and the boys 4×400 team. Both the boys distance medley team of Braden Giswold, Andy Wills, Brett Perkins, and Brandon Bilyeu and the girls medley team of Sara DeGraaf, Lindsey Binford, Julie Gabelein, and Karen Schwager shattered previous school records while running against competition faster than any they will see for the rest of the season. In addition to breaking a record, the boys team’s 10:38.67 time was fast enough to earn fifth-place points in the event. Those were the only points the boys team were able to score in the meet.In the 4×400, Andy Wills, Brett Perkins, Braden Giswold, and Brandon Bilyeu ran .04 seconds faster than the previous school record. They are now the fastest 2A 4×400 relay in the state.Wills also threatened to break a record of his own. His 22.8-second, 12th-place run in the 200 dash was just one-tenth of a second shy of John Steiner’s school record. Junior Joe Candelario did just as well at twice the distance, running a career best 51.39 the 400, ranking himself as the fourth fastest quarter miler in the 2A division. Also performing well for the boys were Bruce Hymas, who set a season-best in the 3,200, Brett Perkins in the 800, and Braden Giswold, who ran a 4:20 mile split in the 1,600 leg of the distance relay, then ran a 4:29 in the open mile three hours later. His time in the relay is the fastest mile ever run by a South Whidbey boy, but the time does not count in the record books because it was set in a relay. Putting on a show for the girls team was senior Andrea McGillen, who placed and scored in both the long and triple jumps. McGillen’s leap of 35-feet, 11.5 inches in the triple was her best of the year and is the longest jump in the 2A division. Her 17-1.5 long jump also ranks her at the top of 2A.Senior Sara DeGraaf set a career mark in the 3,200, running a time of 12:12.0.In the relays, the team also made its mark. The 4×100 team of Dale Bates, Claudia Gil-Osorio, Andrea McGillen, and Melissa Poolman ran fast enough to rank themselves as the second fastest team in the state. In the 4×200, Lindsey Binford, Nicole Mock, Poolman, and Bates were just as fast. Their 1:51.3 is the fourth best 2A time of the season. The team competes next at the Westling Invitational. The meet will be the team’s last at home this year and will showcase senior athletes such as the Killer Bs (Braden Giswold, Brett Perkins, and Bruce Hymas), Andrea McGillen, and Sara DeGraaf. The meet starts at noon at Waterman Field. “
