“The Falcons evened their league record at 2-2 and provided a happy homecoming to the throng at Friday night’s football game at Waterman Field.South Whidbey set the tone for the evening early, launching a drive that culminated in a 15-yard scoring run by sophomore quarterback Bryan Wenker. It was an option play, and Wenker wisely decided to run instead of pitch-out or pass. He made some good decisions, said coach Mick Heggenes, referring to Wenker’s entire night of play. A missed PAT made the score 6-0 in South Whidbey’s favor.Nooksack came back to tie the score but South Whidbey returned the favor in the second quarter. Fullback Alex Hawley led the way by pounding out short yardage gains, eventually scoring from three yards out. Aaron McCabe’s successful kick made it 13-6 at the half.South Whidbey advanced its lead to 20-6 in the third quarter when Wenker struck again, this time from six yards out. McCabe connected on the PAT. Only their own miscues kept the Falcons from adding to their score. Ensuing drives were stopped by a fumble, pass interception and dropped punt.While the offense was having trouble sustaining a drive, the Falcon defense was making sure Nooksack couldn’t mount a comeback. Three Pioneer passes were intercepted during the game, with picks collected by Chris Martin, Justin Shelton and Jake McCormack. Late in the final period Nooksack ended the scoring on a 19-yard run to make the final score of the 2000 homecoming game 20-13.We should have won by more, but the kids kept coming at them, said coach Heggenes. As for the homecoming win, They were super excited, it’s good medicine for everybody.South Whidbey gained 307 yards for the game. Wenker ran 7 times for 61 yards, while Hawley carried the ball 16 times for 61 yards. Justin Shelton added 58 yards in 10 carries. Wenker connected on 5 of 10 passes for 128 yards and no interceptions.Nooksack Valley gained 197 total yards, of which only 31 were through the air.The Falcon defense was anchored by Chriz Hezel, credited by Heggenes with a huge game, who made 11 unassisted tackles, one tackle for a loss, and one sack. Nick Helland recorded 6 unassisted tackles, 3 assists and a sack, and Aaron McCabe was credited with his first sack of the season.Nooksack fell to 0-5 for the season. South Whidbey improved to 2-2 in North Cascades play and 2-3 overall. Not as lucky on Friday the 13th With the homecoming win under their belts, the Falcons left for Whatcom County and Lynden Christian, who was coming off a 21-12 win over previously undefeated Lakewood and is the number three ranked AA team in the state. On the long, Friday the 13th trip to Lynden Christian, the South Whidbey football bus must have crossed under several ladders and had to slow for a number of black cats, because by the time the Falcons got there they didn’t have any luck at all.It started off like Friday the 13th, said coach Mick Heggenes. And it stayed that way, as the Falcons were dealt a 53-0 defeat by the Lyncs, ranked third in the state in class AA ranks.The Falcons were physically no match for the powerful Lyncs, but they hoped to stay competitive by keeping mistakes to a minimum. That strategy fell apart on the opening kickoff, when the South Whidbey return man fumbled and the Lyncs took over, scoring from 30 yards out on their first play.In the first half, South Whidbey fumbled six times and lost every one inside their own 35-yard line, virtually gift wrapping the game for Lynden Christian. By halftime the score was 46-0.Both teams substituted heavily in the second half and the Falcons drastically cut back their errors. The final two periods were scoreless except for a 63-yard Lyncs run that came in the final minute.South Whidbey gained only 47 yards passing and 34 rushing, for less than 100 total yards for the game. The hosts rushed for 354 yards and threw for 94.They were disciplined and fast, Heggenes said, complimenting the Lyncs. They deserve to be up there, at number three.The loss dropped South Whidbey’s overall record to 2-4 while Lynden Christian improved to 6-0. In other games involving North Cascades AA teams Friday, Meridian beat Emerald Ridge 48-0, Blaine downed Lakewood 21-12, Mount Baker pounded Granite Falls 54-0, and Sultan shut out Nooksack Valley 16-0.If polls are any indication, things shouldn’t be so bad for the Falcons this Friday.
