The Cougars entered the game with a 5-7 league mark and had played tough in losses to top rated schools. But they were no match for the Falcons who were anxious for a win, particularly after a disappointing 8-3 loss Tuesday to undefeated Nooksack Valley.While Val Mock kept the Lakewood hitters baffled with her strong pitching, the Falcons scored five runs in the first and six in the second to break it open early. Leading hitters were Sarah Bottenberg who was 2-for-2, Mary Murphy 2-for-3, Lauren Johnson 2-for-3, and Jenny Murphy with a double.The defensive play of the game was a diving catch by center fielder Ashley Lopez. It was spectacular; it amazed me, said Falcon coach Renee Christian.The Falcons on Tuesday were hoping to knock off the league’s top team but it wasn’t to be. Nooksack displayed hitting depth, strong pitching and a tight defense to build up an 8-0 lead. The spunky Falcons rallied for three runs in the last inning, but the rally was too little, too late. Jenny Murphy went 2-for-4 and Keasha Campbell 2-for-3.The Falcons are in third place in league with an 8-4 record with four games to go in the regular season. Their final home game of the year will be Friday, May 5 against Meridian with the special starting time of 5:30.”
