“South Whidbey’s fastpitch team mounted a successful final-inning comeback to go 1-0 on the season Saturday.The Falcons played on Sequim’s diamond and found themselves in trouble in the bottom of the fourth inning when they were ahead 2-1. Starter Val Mock gave up one run and loaded the bases with only one out. Coach Rene Christian called on Ashley Lopez to relieve, and she fanned two and got out of the inning giving only one additional run. After four the game was tied 2-2.Sequim took a 3-2 lead in the sixth, sending South Whidbey to bat for the final time in the top of the seventh. The Falcon girls responded to the pressure situation. It was great to see they could come from behind, said coach Christian.During the seventh, Lopez doubled home two runs while RBI singles were collected by Julie Robinson, Shannon Brown and Keasha Campbell. The barrage put the Falcons ahead 7-3, and Sequim could manage only a single run in their final at-bat to make the final 7-4.The Falcons were scheduled to play Meadowdale on Tuesday, and to host Mariner this Thursday. The first North Cascades Conference game is scheduled for Tuesday, March 20 when Granite Falls visits South Whidbey.Besides the clutch hitting in which six hits produced seven runs, Christian was impressed by the Falcons’ early season defense. The fielders produced an errorless first outing highlighted by a slick double play executed by freshman second baseman Bronwyn Russell. “
