“If an Arlington-based construction company meets an architect’s standards, Fire District 3 has a builder for its new Freeland fire station.At a special meeting Monday, the district’s commissioners opened bids from five construction companies vying for the project. The low bidder was Jenkins Construction at $1,010,600. The company beat out the number two bidder, Rosendaal-Honcoop Construction, by $28,000.Fire Chief Don Smith said Wednesday that the bid is almost $200,000 lower than what the district had estimated. The savings, he said, could be funneled into a remodeling project at the Clinton fire station, or into a planned central facility on Thompson Road.Final approval of Jenkins as the station’s contractor will be up to the fire district’s architect, Peter Carletti. Jenkins has built projects on South Whidbey in the past. In 1994, the company remodeled and built an addition onto the Langley Library. In 1997, Jenkins built the Langley Visitors Information Center and public restrooms. The visitors center project required several change orders during construction and at one point Jenkins had to tear out large sections of concrete sidewalk because it was poured incorrectly. “
