Fire near Langley consumes unoccupied storage building

South Whidbey Fire/EMS responded to the fire at the building around 4:07 a.m. Wednesday.

An early morning blaze fully engulfed an unoccupied structure that was being used as a storage facility.

South Whidbey Fire/EMS responded to the fire at the Langley Road building around 4:07 a.m. Wednesday. A passerby, noticing the flames, called it in, according to South Whidbey Fire/EMS Deputy Chief Terry Ney.

Ney said the fire was starting to spread to the trees when the fire department arrived. Firefighters were on scene for about three hours to fully extinguish the flames. There were no injuries reported.

The building, Ney said, was “chock-full” of machinery, tools and heavy equipment. He counted three forklifts, a boat and a motorhome. Nothing was salvageable or usable.

“It was like an old equipment graveyard,” Ney said.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated, although Ney said it did seem a little suspicious because there has been no obvious thing that can be pointed to as the cause, such as a heating source in use on the property.

The building’s owner, who lives in Clinton, was not on Whidbey Island at the time of the fire.

Ney said there was no substantial loss because of the fire. According to data from the Island County Assessor’s Office, the value of the storage building on the property was listed as $2,600.
